Francesco Stella (1962) is professor of medieval Latin literature at the University of Siena, where he leads the Center for Comparative Studies “I Deug-Su” (centroideugsu.unisi.it). Member of Academia Europaea and the Medieval Academy of America, he coordinates research projects supported by the European Commission, such as the Corpus Rhythmorum Musicum (www.corimu.unisi.it), or by Italian Cultural Institutions such as alim.unisi.it (the Archive of Italian Latinity of the Middle Ages) and Eurasian Latin Archive (ela.unisi.it). He is chief editors of the series Scrittori latini dell’Europa medievale (including his editions of Gesta Berengarii, Einhard’s Translatio, Valahfrid’s Visio Wettini, and Ysengrimus’ first book), awarded by the European Creative Culture program, co-editor of Documenta Orientalia, and the Hagiographica Coreana project. His latest volumes are The Carolingian Revolution (Brepols 2020), Digital Philology and Quantitative Criticism of Medieval Latin Literature (Brepols 2020), Il testo dell’immagine (Mondadori 2021), Latin literatures of medieval and early modern times in Europe and beyond. A Millennium heritage, co-ed. with L. Dolezalova and D. Shanzer, Philadelphia, J. Benjamin’s 2024. National award for translation of the Ministry of Culture in 2021, in 2022 he was Chaire Gutenberg at the University of Strasbourg. From 1986 to 2024 he has been chief editor of Semicerchio.
